We have all seen the films and heard of Friday 13th being unlucky, but where did it all begin?

Friday 13th has been seen as an unlucky day in many cultures and societies for centuries. There are numerous beliefs as to why this is. Friday is viewed as an unlucky day in many societies and there are numerous different ideas behind this belief for example, in Christianity, Christ was crucified on a Friday others believe it stems from the 14th century The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, in which Friday is referred to as an unlucky day: “And on a Friday fell all this mischance”

The number 13 is almost universally seen as an unlucky number. It is generally thought this stems from numerology and its link with religion. The number 12 recurs time and time again in many religions of the world as it is seen in numerology as the number of divine organisation or chronological completeness. This can be seen in the 12 months of the year, 12 numbers on a daily clock, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 Apostles , 12 successors of Muhammad in Shia Islam and 12 signs of the Zodiac. The number 12 represented order and belief for many people in the past. The number 13 however is seen as irregular and transgressing this order. It was seen as unlucky that there were 13 people at the Last Supper and also in Norse Mythology it was said that if 13 people sat together at a table it would result in the death of one of the diners.

The first example of the Friday 13th superstition appears in the history of the Knights Templar popularised recently in Dan Brown’s 2003 novel The Da Vinci Code. It’s said that on Friday 13th of October 1307, hundreds of members of the Knights Templar were arrested in France by the forces of Phillip VI .

The first written example of the Friday 13th superstition appears in Henry Sutherland Edward’s 1869 biography of Gioachino Rossini, the famous Italian operatic composer. Rossini believed that Friday was an unlucky day and that 13 was the unluckiest of numbers and he died on Friday 13th of November 1868. Sutherland writes: “He was surrounded to the last by admiring friends; and if it be true that, like so many Italians, he regarded Fridays as an unlucky day and thirteen as an unlucky number, it is remarkable that one Friday 13th of November he died ..”

Whether you suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia (the fear of Friday 13th), you are just a superstitious person or not at all, it appears Friday 13th won’t be going away anytime soon. Roll on June 2014!!!!

On February 22nd I went on the Northside walking tour because I thought learning about the darker sides of history would be very interesting…. The evening was very eventful, I recorded everyting that happend upon my return to my hostel, and after a lot of debating with myself I would like to share my experiences with you.

My entire life I’ve been hypersensitive to emotions and the pressence of ghosts, being able to see and feel them and not all of my experiences were pleasant. I knew that this tour would put me at risk but I figured that I’d be fine because I had learned how to protect myself over the years by manipulating my own energy into forming a shield….

When we started at the deconsecrated graveyard nothing happend and I figured it would stay that way, but then we reached St Mary’s Abbey. The moment we neared the building (we weren’t even near the alley yet) I started freaking out and I really didn’t want to be there, I did go in the alley though… because I’m too curious for my own good I suppose. Whatever was there drained me entirely of my energy, leaving me feeling weak, dizzy, nausseaus and with a headache that lasted untill we left. From that point on I lost my ability to shield myself.
As we started walking up the hangman’s road (whatever it’s called now) I felt hands on my back, pushing me forward, as if I wasn’t walking fast enough or being guided somewhere. Later, once we reached the point were our guide told us about Scaldbrother, I had a strong sense of déjavu. I had seen this before, listened to this story and standing that exact same location before… except that I’d never been to Dublin before in my life.
Once we went on to Hendrick street, I asked the ghost of the little girl to join me and I felt her pressence (and a profound cold spot on my upper thigh) all the way there. Now, I didn’t feel anything from the spot were houses number 7 & 8 used to be… but the morgue gave me the creeps before I even knew what it was. The building behind me gave off such an angry vibe that I didn’t dare pass by too close to it. This is where I shot a picture with at least 4 to 7 orbs on it.
The baraks turned museum were an unpleasent experience, pain spiked trough my head upon approach and I couldn’t shake the feeling of being stared at from the second visible window on the second floor. I don’t think I’ll ever go in that building, not even during the day.
Croppie’s Acre… was very strange, it felt both full and empty at the same time and no sound seemed to come from there. The quiet felt unnatural and unsettling (it didn’t help that I still felt stared at from the window behind me) There was a cold wind that evening and though it wasn’t strong persé, it deffinitly tugged at our clothes and hair during the walk and when we passed Croppie’s Acre to go to the bank… and yet, I couldn’t detect a breeze comming from the field… it could’ve been nothing, but it struck me as odd.
My experiences ended after Croppie’s Acre, but I didn’t venture into the Brazen Head’s club so who knows… I did go back to St Mary’s Abby and the graveyard though. I wanted to take a picture of both places, something I forgot the first time around. Something showed up at the graveyard but I still didn’t feel all that much. Going to the Abby frightned me so much that I stayed a good distance away from the entrance of the alley and shot my picture from the street, zooming in on the corner where the guide told us a man could sometimes be seen. Nothing showed up on my picture.

I left the tour feeling very shaken and with the knowledge that my energy control still needs a lot of training XD Nevertheless, I learned a lot during the tour, it was interesting and the guide was very entusiastic, and proffessional. It showed that she had a lot of knowladge on the subjects so my compliments to her. Also, I shared a bit of my experiences with her… thanks for not laughing at me, a lot of people would have done so the moment I told them that I can basically “see dead people.” Normal people might not go on another tour after they had experiences like mine, but I’m not normal I suppose, and I would deffinatly go on another one of your tours next time I’m in Dublin.. maybe go to the Hellfire Club and see what I find there

For the widest variety of tastes and ages I would recommend the Haunted History Tour, it fits the bill as it is fun, informative but can also be quite scary too depending on what happens that night. It is suitable for teenagers and adults. It runs on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays.

On Sundays we have the Northside Ghost Walk and the Gravedigger Ghost Bus running. Both of them are definitely more adult oriented. The Gravedigger Ghost Bus has a fair amount of bawdy humour (not suitable for children) and the Northside Ghost Walk is much drier and history heavy than the Haunted History Tour and so suits and older, more mature crowd.

1. What is your favourite thing about the city?

Being so heavily involved in the tourism industry, our favorite thing has to be its rich History and heritage. We simply never get bored of exploring or hearing stories from the locals we meet on our tours. There are just so many hidden attractions and gems out there that people don’t know about, and buildings and attractions that have been left to decay making for lots of fun walks. We also love how close Dublin is located to the mountains, making it easy to escape and immerse yourself at any time.

2. What is your favourite site to visit, and why?

Personally, my favorite site to visit is Poolbeg Lighthouse. The lighthouse there is located on the Great South Wall (South Bull Wall), at the Port of Dublin, which extends from Ringsend nearly four miles out into Dublin Bay. I love to walk out here where views of Dublin, Dún Laoghaire, Howth, and extensive views of the sea cliffs can be enjoyed. After this, we enjoy going for Lunch or a few drinks in the Church Bar on Mary street – where Arthur Guinness himself was married, and of course, the starting point for our evening Northside Ghost Walk.

3. How was Hidden Dublin Walks started?
Hidden Dublin was started 4 years ago on returning from a trip to Scotland. We were fascinated with the Dark history and underground chambers of Mary Kings Close, and so began researching and exploring the Haunted side of our own city. Our love and passion for this grew and grew, the result now being the full time operation of 4 of Dublin’s most loved evening tours – Haunted History Walk (A Focus on the southside), Northside Ghost Walk, The Black Tale, and The Gravedigger Bus Tour – www.thegravedigger.ie We also are planning a new edition to the fleet coming this April…

4. Which tour is your favourite? Why?

Our Favorite tour is undoubtedly the Hellfire Club – http://www.hiddendublinwalks.com/ghost-tour-dublin.php. The Hell Fire Club, situated at 1275 feet, near the summit of Mount Pelier overlooks Dublin city from the south west. The site was originally a passage tomb. Richard Parsons, the first Earl of Rosse, established the Hell-Fire Club in Dublin in 1735. The Clubs became associated with excessive drinking. Scaltheen, a drink made from whiskey and butter was served in abundance during meetings of the Hell Fire Club. Current urban lore tells us that it was, and still is, a site commonly used for the practice of Satanism and other occult activities, and that the Devil himself made brief appearances at some unspecified times in the past. Whilst we encourage all punters on this walk to keep an open mind, we do GUARANTEE the best view in Dublin on this tour, and a fun evening walk that is defiantly something different. The atmosphere up here is spectacular, and it also gives us a chance to personally interact with people on a much deeper level on the walk up the mountain. Dark history and great fun deep in the Dublin Mountains, away from the city – that’s why its our favourite.

5. Tell us one thing most people don’t know about the city.
How Dublin got its name – from dubh-linn, which means black pool in the traditional Irish language, because in the times of Viking settlement there, there was a big black coloured water pool on the site and it took its name from it then.

6. Which is your most popular tour, and why?

Our most popular tour at present is our Gravedigger Ghost Bus (http://www.hiddendublinwalks.com/ghost-tour-dublin-bus-gravedigger.php) We promise this is no ORDINARY bus and was the result of over 6 full time staff working on customising an old Dublin Bus Double Decker for almost a year. The tour departs outside Extreme Ireland College Green Tourist office. The stories begin with Trinity College where your guide will transport you back some 600 years ago to when the old Augustinian Priory and of course the plague house were there. The latter of which the guide is all too familiar with…
Many believed that the plague was the end of days, but the history of Dublin and its horrors continued. This is also Ireland’s ONLY 4D bus. By 4D we mean that there are numerous surprised packed on board – the seats blast air at you, the bus gets filled with smoke, the sound and lighting is professionally choreographed, and our actors..well lets just say don’t stand too close!

7. What’s the best time year to visit? Why?

Operating mostly evening tours, we have to say that the best time to visit is the darker evenings. We just love them. Its also a totally different side of Dublin that people don’t expect!

8. What’s the best question you’ve ever been asked on a walk?

Our favourite has to be “Can you guarantee me that I will see a ghost?” Yes, people do actually ring us up and ask this, and you would be surprised at how often it happens. Well, we cant guarantee this of course, but we have lots of stories and experiences where we simply cant explain what people allegedly have seen on our tours, or why some simply faint. On our Haunted History tour, inside the gates of St Audeons which we open for people, what amazes us is that people from all around the world, who have never met, claim to see the same thing…

9. If you could only take one souvenir from the city, what would it be?

Personally, it would be great to take the Spike From O’Connel street home with you. We’d say you might even be able to fit it in your hand luggage and you would simply save Dublin corporation a fortune by not having to clean the thing… For more Great hints and tips like this, please visit www.hiddendublinwalks.com. With Hidden Dublin Walks, reveal the true dark mysteries and histories across a variety of historical periods and unique sightseeing locations frequented only by us. We focus on the characters, that’s why we are different!

Do you want to have a good time in Dublin and like the supernatural or paranormal? If so, then you should consider taking the ghost bus Dublin! The ghost bus Dublin has to offer will take you to all sorts of places and you can bring along friends for a really good time. They have all sorts of entertainment waiting for you so if you are seeking a way to entertain people from out of town or just want something new to do with friends, then this will be for you.

What does the ghost bus offer? Well, for one you get to tour some of the most haunted places in Dublin! If you do not believe in ghosts, then that is fine as you will still have a good time learning about history on this trip. If you want to see ghosts, then you just have to believe and chances are that you will see all sorts of signs that they exist and are looking for you. You just have to believe and you will see.

There are a lot more than spirits haunting these trips, too. When you take the ghost bus as one of the Dublin tours that are offered, you get a chance to see various places that have historical significance. The reason that places are said to be haunted is because they have had some sort of paranormal occurrences in these places. When so many people are saying the same thing about these places and seeing ghosts, there tends to be something to that so buckle your seatbelts and get ready to take a tour on the ghost bus. They do not bar anything that you can see on this tour so you never know when you are going to encounter a spirit!

Have some fun by being open minded about the trip and why you are there. If you go on the tour to have a good time, then chances are that you will have a good time. If you truly believe in your heart that you are going to see a ghost, then chances are that you are going to see a ghost. If you are a non-believer, then you may have to be convinced. It is a good idea to bring friends along, even if they do not believe or want to believe in the spirit world as they will probably enjoy the personal history that the guides will relate. There are also actors who will give a demonstration of real living history for those who take these tours.

Learning about history is best learned from those who were there to experience it. However, as we cannot count on the spirits showing up when we want them to show up (they do not go on the same time table as the living), then actors can fill in and take over. If you want to have a spooky good time as well as learn something about history in Dublin, then be sure to get on one of the ghost bus tours that are available in Dublin.

What do you do if you come into contact with a ghost during one of the tours of Dublin? Chances are that you will have no idea that you actually did find a ghost as they are not transparent as people tend to think that they are. There are some ghost hunters who say that the ghosts are just as solid as a living person and that they tend to blend into the crowd. You never know who or what is going to be on the ghost bus Dublin has to offer, you might even encounter a real ghost!

So what do you do if such an occurrence happens? You should remain calm if you feel as though you are talking to a ghost and speak with them just like you would anyone else. You may learn a thing or two from talking to them and at the very least, you will have an otherworldly occurrence that you are not likely to forget. Talk to them in a clear voice and be sure to try to understand what they are saying to you. Their conversation will be marked because they will be living in a different world. They may be a bit dated when they speak which is a clue that you are talking to someone who is not of this earth.

Do you believe in ghosts? If you believe that spirits exist outside of the living body, then there is no reason not to believe in ghosts. There are some who say that ghosts are all around, that the spirits can take on various forms and even come through living people when they do not suspect what is happening. If you feel this way, then you will believe in ghosts or spirits, whatever you want to call them. They are one although spirit has a less negative meaning than the word ghost.

The idea of the ghosts hurting you or trying to cause you harm during the Dublin tours is nonsense. The ghosts are merely trying to communicate with the living. Those who are afraid of bad spirits do not have to worry about them targeting them unless they are of a weak mind and will take on the bad spirit. Most of the spirits are merely trying to communicate with the living because they have something left to say. You can end up helping them and at the same time, feeling pretty good about yourself. If you take the ghost bus Dublin, you have a good chance of catching a spirit as this is opening you up to new experiences.

Going on a tour of Dublin can be very thrilling, especially if you end up meeting a ghost or two. At the very least, you will have a good time with others, all of whom are there because they want to meet ghosts or at least find some evidence that they exist. You will also get to see some historical places that are not found on ordinary tours. You can have a good time by yourself, with a friend or even with a group when you take one of the tours of Dublin that involve ghosts.

If you are all about pirates and hidden treasure, then be sure to take one of the Dublin sightseeing tours that involves ghosts. There are many pirate haunts that are located in and around Dublin. Many years ago, pirates came and made Dublin one of their stops, being sure to hide treasure and many of them left their spirits behind to guard that very booty that they worked so hard in life to acquire. When you explore the world of Dublin through one of the Dublin tours, then you may even run into a real pirate, although they will not be among the living.

If you think that you will spot the pirate right away because they are hobbling around on a peg leg and wearing an eye patch, think again. The ghosts are very tricky and are able to take on forms of humans that you would not suspect. Until you get them to start talking, then the truth comes out. If you want to spot a ghost of a pirate during a Dublin sightseeing adventure, then you have to keep an open mind. Be sure that you realize that the ghosts will not be transparent and that you can miss them if you do not know what you are looking for.

It helps, to find a ghost, to know the area as well as understand the history that they will be interested in. The more you know about the history of the ghosts, the more you will be able to know how to spot them when you are talking to people who may have picked up the spirit. Be sure to be open and talk to others during the Dublin sightseeing excursion as this is where you will contact the spirit of the pirate. You never know, if the pirate likes you enough, they may tell you where to find the treasure. At the very least, you will know a lot about the history of the pirates and this is never a loss.

It is always interesting to learn history. The more you learn about history, the more you end up knowing about the people who lived back in the day. It is fun to learn history from the viewpoint of those who actually lived it. Now when you go on the ghost bus Dublin has to offer, you will learn about history from actors who will act out the parts. These are not ghosts, but actors. But because they will be clueing you in to what went on many years ago, centuries even, you will have an idea of what happened in those days an even be able to spot a ghost from the time period if your eyes are open enough. Remember that the ghost spirit can come through when you least suspect it so keep your eyes and ears open. You also have to be open minded as well when you are on one of these tours as if you feel as though you do not believe, then you will not believe. There are many people who encounter ghosts during these trips but many do not feel as though they want to talk about it because they do not want to be thought of as crazy. So have your fun, book a trip and see where it takes you.

A ghost tour Dublin can bring you to many different haunts that are located in the area. One of them is a haunted brewery. You might not think that the spirits are mingling in with the hops, but that is exactly the case when you take one of the tours of Dublin. Not only will you learn about the spirit world from this sort of trip, but you can also learn a bit about what went on to make the brewery haunted.

Why do people want to see ghosts? Most of them find this a bit scary but fun. We all tend to like the supernatural and want to watch ghost stories when we go to the movies – these movies tend to draw in a crowd. One of the reasons that people tend to like these sorts of things is because the ghosts represent spirits that continue to live on after death. The one sure way that people can find that there is life after death is to observe the spirit world while they are still living.

What should you take when you are visiting the haunted brewery or any other type of haunt? Be sure to take a notebook, one that will fit into your pocket as you can write down odd things that occur during your trip. You have to be very observant when you are looking for spirits and note when someone says something that does not sound quite right. Be aware of them tuning in to your perception as well. It is as if the spirits can actually read your mind. They will be in tune with you more than you are with them so this is something that you should know.

The more you know about the spirits that haunt the brewery, the more you will be able to communicate with them. Be open and honest in your communication and say whatever comes off the top of your head. This is a good way to let the other world know that you understand them and are open to what they have to say. You never know what type of spirit you are going to encounter when you go on one of these excursions. The good thing is that those on the ghost bus Dublin are all looking for the same thing. They are all positive when it comes to being open to the ghosts or else they would not be there. Everyone wants to actually see a ghost when they go on one of these trips so you never really know what or who you are going to run into.

Do you think that the ghosts will be transparent and like those that you see in the movies? Not so. In fact, they will be more like those that were spotted in the movie The Sixth Sense, in that they will be solid figures. Chances are that you will not see so many of them all of the time like the little boy in that movie, but you can see one. Be sure to take a camera with you so that you can capture them on film. Ghosts are not camera shy so they will let you take their picture.

People are starting to realize that there are ghosts and they walk among us, which is what makes the ghost tour Dublin has to offer so exciting. If you are looking for spirits, you have to know where to find them. One of the best places to find the spirits is on a ghost tour. Dublin has many tours, but few are as exciting as those that offer ghosts along with the package. Some of them are walking tours and others are bus tours. Whether you wish to walk or take a bus, there is something for everyone who wants to delve into the spirit world.

Just what is the spirit world? Many of those who want to believe in ghosts will think that this is a world full of spirits of the dead and that you have to be dead in order to live in this world. While you will not want your body when you are living in the spirit world, it is fine to go in and visit once in a while. You can then communicate with the spirits if they are in a communicative mood, and find out what life is like on the different planes. You should be warned, however, that the spirits tend to communicate with those who are receptive to them and you do not get a long period of time to talk to them. You get a short period of time and if you get to talk to a real ghost, which is a big plus. Most of the time, the spirit shines through others.

The ghost tour Dublin will not only bring you into a glimpse of the spirit world, but will also tell you a thing or two about history. There are those who believe that we should always be learning, even in the spirit world they are forever learning. The more we learn, the more we know and the more we can pass on to others. The ghost tour will teach you hands on history that does not feel as though it comes from a book. Learning strictly from a book can be boring for many people. Going on a tour and just looking at old building and having someone lecture about them can be boring as well. If you want to learn about history, you are better off to learn it from those who had a hand in it. These tours are so much more interesting than traditional historic tours in that they actually can bring the history to life, so to speak.

Whether or not you believe in ghosts, chances are that you will enjoy these tours as there are many of them from which you can choose. Whether you like the dark side of the spirit world or that of the fun side, there is something for everyone. Those who want to learn about the macabre will find plenty of it to go around when they take on one of these tours. You never know if you are going to see a real ghost. Or feel one. You can pick up a spirit if you take one of these tours, no doubt. So have some fun and be sure to book a tour today.

One of the hottest topics during the Dublin tours is that about the Vikings. These men from the north came and invaded the peaceful country of Ireland, taking many of the peaceful Celts as prisoners. Today, their spirits cry out to be heard, to talk about the injustice of what happened to them at the hands of the Vikings. The Vikings are all laughing about it, at least their spirits are, and you can learn all about this when you take one of the Dublin tours. It is the walking tour Dublin that will teach you all about the Vikings and even take you to where they set up their own little enclave.

While learning about the Vikings and how they invaded Ireland may be painful for some, it is something that is worth knowing for future generations. You can enjoy learning from this part of history when you take one of Dublin tours. There may be some ghosts along the way as the Vikings and their rowdy behavior might have incited some of the Celts to protest in the spirit world. And surely, the spirits are all probably trying to compete with one another as to who has the best stories.

The Vikings will tell you that they needed to conquer new lands and so they invaded Ireland. They will downplay any problems that they had with the Celts and probably deny that they took advantage of any of the Celtic women. This is to be expected from this part of the spirit world. They will most likely tell of their days of glory and how they were explorers who were eager to bring change in the world. If you get a chance to talk to a Viking spirit, they will tell you how they braved the north winds and came to Ireland to make it their home. They will also probably downplay any interference in the Celtic traditions.

The Celts, if you get a chance to talk to any of their spirits, will probably give you a whole different version of the Vikings and their meandering into their lives. They will discuss how they were probably minding their own business in Ireland until the Vikings came along. You can listen to the stories of the Viking and Celtic spirits and then decide which of the spirits are telling the truth. This can be a fun way to learn about history as well as get in touch with the spirit world.

If you like Irish history or Viking lore, then you will enjoy this type of tour. The Dublin tours offer not only a chance to take a look at some of the most scenic places in Dublin, but also a chance to learn about people who were in Ireland many, many centuries ago and how they lived with one another. You can learn about the Celts, as they are a vital part of the past of the country, but also about the Vikings as they also are a big part of what Ireland is today.

There are spirits involved in the Dublin sightseeing and not just those that you find in a pub! If you are looking to discover more about the spirit world then a good way to discover it is to take one of the Ghost tours that are offered in this area. There are walking tours of Dublin as well as those that take place on a ghost bus. In many cases, the bus tours allow those on board to disembark and check out the sites. Not only do you get a chance to find out more about the spirit or ghost world, but you also out about history as it relates to these spirits.

If you encounter a spirit during your Dublin sightseeing chances are that you will have no idea that you are encountering a ghost. Contrary to what many people think, the ghosts are not transparent apparitions that spook people but as solid as anyone on earth. They walk among us all of the time, though few of us recognize them as ghosts. Most of the time, we have an explanation when we think we saw someone behind us on the street or saw a fleeting glimpse of someone in a store who disappeared. If you are in tune with the spirit world, then you may be able to see the ghosts that haunt areas. They are usually very quiet and do not speak to you unless you speak to them, contrary to what people think about spirits.

Those who do not believe in ghosts will simply not believe, even if they see it for themselves they will come up with some sort of explanation that defines what they have seen or simply choose to ignore it as this can be easier for many of those who do not want to believe in the spirit world. Those who believe in ghosts may not understand what they are looking for or how to deal with the spirits if they find them. The spirits in the spirit world are not looking to harm, so although this may seem like a scary idea to find the ghosts on one of the tours of Dublin, it is not dangerous. The stories of ghosts haunting people and causing harm are greatly exaggerated. For the most part, those who have spirits living in their homes are not upset to find them there. To the contrary, they are a welcome addition as they cause no harm and can be fun to have around.

On top of getting a chance to learn about the spirits and what moves them on your Dublin sightseeing excursion, you also get to have a good time with the living. These tours are very lively, so to speak, and you can bring friends or go along by yourself – it is all good. You will have a good time as the tour guides know all about the history of the area and you not only get a chance to see ghosts, but learn a thing or two but in a fun way. The next time you are looking for something to do, think about going on a ghost tour of Dublin.

There are plenty of things that you can experience during a walking tour Dublin has to offer. These include actually roaming around with ghosts of the past as their spirits still remain. There are some very haunted places that are located throughout Dublin and many things occur in these places that simply cannot be explained. The reason that some places get a reputation for being haunted is not because someone just decided to make up a story about them but because there has been considerable amount of paranormal activity in these areas. This activity is from spirits that for some reason are not resting.

Why are there some places that are more haunted than others? There are many ideas concerning this, many theories. Some will say that during the walking tour Dublin, a person will go to places where a lot of dark things occurred and the spirits who might have met an unnatural death in life are still there, trying to get their story out. Their spirit remains in the place, although it is not there all of the time. There have been reports by those who have been around places such as plane crash sites that have heard the sound of spirits. There are those who say that when unnatural death occurs, part of the spirit remains to tell the story. This is what makes some places more haunted than others.

During the walking tour Dublin, you will take a look at the places that have the reputation for being the most haunted. If you are seeking out a ghost tour Dublin, you have a choice of whether you want to go by bus or by foot. Those who want to walk will get a chance to see a lot more of the haunted sites than if they are on a bus, so many prefer this. If you are serious about seeking out the spirits, then by all means take a look at those that are haunting the very sites that are located on the tours. The Dublin tours can take you to a variety of different haunts and there are tours for just about every interest. If you can walk well, however, you owe it to yourself to take one of the walking tours Dublin has to offer, especially those that delve into the supernatural as this gives you an opportunity to see some places that are not part of regular tourist tours and also a chance to go into the spirit world, or at least mingle with them.

One group of people you will learn quite a bit about is the Vikings as they invaded Ireland hundreds of years ago and their haunts remain. As do the haunts of those who they invaded. There are many stories of Viking invasions in Ireland and seeing the places where those from the North conquered may be a bit unsettling for some, but anyone with Celtic blood will want to learn this piece of history as it relates to them.

A popular stop on any Dublin walking tour, St. Michan’s Church has to be one of the creepiest churches in all of Ireland, let alone Europe. Older churches can seem creepy to visitors, probably because of the weight of all that history bearing down on you when you pass through the doors. That feeling is present in St. Michan’s Church as well, but it goes much further than that, and this is definitely not a stop for the squeamish, or faint of heart.

A venerable part of Irish history

St. Michan’s Church was built on what used to be a centuries old forest. The vaults that lie beneath it were built first, then the church was built right on top of them by the Danish bishop who would become St. Michan after his death. Dating back to 1095, this is one of the oldest churches still standing in Dublin, and pretty much all of Ireland. The treasures contained within it are unique themselves, and are said to include, among other things, the death mask of Theobald Wolfe Tone, the charismatic patriot, who died in 1768.

This building has seen a lot of this land’s history, both the good and the bad, and stands as a vital witness to the past even to this day. It is also the location of one of the most haunted areas in all of Dublin, deep down in the vaults below the church proper.

Enter if you dare

Included on both daytime tours, and the popular ghost tours of Dublin that take place at night, how you wish to view the vaults is completely up to you. If you are the least bit squeamish, you might want to stick to viewing it in the daytime, when the ghosts of the dead are not prone to wander about on their own. However, if you like a good scare, take advantage of the night tours and enter the vaults of the dead, if you dare.

The guide will led you down a steep flight of stone stairs, after passing through two huge iron doors that bar the public from entering without permission. The air down here is strangely warm, not exactly what you would expect a subterranean vault to be like. Once your eyes adjust to the darkness, the first thing you will notice is that there is a series of vaulted cells that lead off from the central passage.

What lies inside

Inside several of these cells you will see coffins, stacked every which way, with generations of the same family lying on top of one another. Some of them have collapsed, revealing bony arms and legs spilling out the sides in broken disarray. They are easily recognizable for what they are, because even after 500 years down here, none of them have disintegrated into dust, but are mummified and preserved instead. As your guide will probably demonstrate, they even remain remarkably supple, freely bending with help.

Some of these bodies are so life like in their death poses that they look like they could get up at any second, as if they were taking a bit of a nap. The atmosphere changes a bit the further you get into the vaults, and several patrons have reported hearing whispering around them as they wandered, while others report the feeling of being watched…

The tale of Puck the sentry takes place at the venerable Malahide Castle, located in the countryside of Dublin County. A bit of a historical favorite for those who enjoy historical tours of Dublin, this massive fortress is nine miles to the north of Dublin, and a sight to behold. It springs up in the middle of a massive and ancient fortress, looking for all intents and purposes as if it grew there like the oaks, sycamores and chestnut trees that surround it.

Originally built by Richard Talbot shortly after receiving the Lordship of Malahide from King Henry II in 1185, it remained in the hands of the Talbot family for nearly 790 years. After the death of the last Lord Talbot, Milo, in 1975, his sister Rose was forced to sell it back to the local government to pay the death taxes on his estate. Once the local authority took it over, they opened the castle to the public, and visitors can experience a time capsule of sorts that goes back centuries, since everything within it is preserved as it was all those years ago.

The legend of Cromwell and Malahide

There was a time during the reign of the Talbot family went they lost their ancestral home by force, thanks to the infamous Cromwell. In 1649, Cromwell invaded Ireland with more than 12000 soldiers at his command, and decided the Malahide Castle would make the perfect base for his defeat of Ireland. With a goodly number of soldiers, he forced the then Lord of Malahide, John Talbot, out of his home, and gave it over to one of his own sworn men, Miles Corbet.

There was a Flemish carving above the fireplace in what is called the Oak Room, a beautiful work that depicted the Coronation of the Virgin. It had rested there for generations, but when Cromwell invaded and replaced Talbot with Corbet, it disappeared. No one was seen removing it, and it would have been a job to do so, since it was made out of solid oak, and filled a third of the wall above the fireplace. It was not seen again for nearly ten years, when it suddenly reappeared in its original place following the restoration of Charles II in 1660. After the carving reappeared, the castle was given back to the Talbot family, and Miles Corbet was executed for treason.
The tale of Puck

The Oak Room is also the site of one of the family ghost stories that draws visitors to see for themselves if he exists for real. A popular tale on Dublin ghost tours, the story of Puck the sentry begins on June 30th, 1690. On that date, fourteen members of the Talbot family breakfasted together here in the Oak Room, one of the largest in the home, in preparation for leaving to join up with forces fighting the Battle of The Boyne. Every single one of them who left to fight that day were never seen again, and were all killed during the conflict.

The ghost known as Puck, was apparently employed here as a trusted watchman for the grounds. Skirmishes and fighting was prevalent all through the countryside during these times, and every settlement like this one employed their own forces. Puck, unfortunately, was known to be easily bored, and enjoyed a drink now and then to ease the tedium of a quiet night. One night, apparently, he fell asleep while on duty, and an enemy managed to storm the castle that same night. They were turned away, but in shame, Puck hung himself from the Minstrel’s Gallery the next night.

Anyone who has ever heard Irish music in the past is probably familiar with the reel known as Molly Malone. A standard number played in most concert and pub venues, it tells of an attractive young woman making her way in the world, selling seafood by the barrow, through the streets of Dublin. In the song, she dies from a fever, and her ghost is thought to haunt Dublin to this day. The city itself is so enamored with the legend of Molly Malone that a statue to her memory was erected near Trinity College, to celebrate the millennium anniversary of the city’s founding.

The creation of the statue, and the research into the legend that followed it, also touched off a bit of a controversy that really never was settled. To this day, there are those who contend that Molly Malone never existed, and that the song was not even written by an Irishman! Nevertheless, the argument still continues, and it has not diminished the popularity of the lass, especially during ghost tours of Dublin at night.

Will the real Molly Malone stand up?

The sculptor chosen to recreate Molly Malone in statue form really did not help matters with his rendition of the famous lass. His name was Jean Rynhart, and styled his statue in such a way as to actually smear the legend a bit, and not in a good way. His Molly Malone shows her to be a scantily clad temptress with a wheelbarrow, selling fish and shells, while dressed for what was rumored to be her true profession, as a prostitute. To use this rendition to celebrate the founding of Dublin was scandalous, and there was quite an uproar about it all. Still, the statue still stands, and the mystery about Molly Malone is still as murky as ever before.

The statue was placed at the crossroads between Suffolk Street, and Fishamble Street. During a ceremony, the supposed birth and death records of a woman thought to be the original Molly Malone were presented to the lord mayor at St. Andrew’s Church. The records showed that the woman believed to be the real Molly Malone was born Mary Malone, the daughter of Robert Malone. She had been baptized at St. John’s church, since destroyed, when it existed on Fishamble Street. This left dirt on the faces of the officials who had held the reception at St. Andrew’s because it had been believed to be “her” church. Molly is a nickname for Mary, but it left many believing that the woman had never really existed at all.

The new urban legend

With all of the controversy, the legend has pretty much been reduced to an urban legend surrounding that section of Dublin. It still gets featured on ghost walks because of the end of the song, and even the statue is now viewed with a little more affection than its nickname, The Tart With The Cart, might imply. There are layers to this tale that may never be resolved, but for now, it should be enjoyed as it was meant to, a tale to warm the heart, and chill the blood at the same time.
